One of The Malhar Group’s educational projects is to conduct in-school lecture- demonstrations introducing Indian classical music to students.  During 2007, these events were held in ten schools of Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, as follows:

  • Hillcrest (May 25, 2007)
  • Lake Avenue (May 25, 2007)
  • Dundas District (October 15, 2007)
  • Ancaster Meadow (October 15, 2007)
  • Flamborough Centre (October 16, 2007)
  • Allan Greenleaf (October 16, 2007)
  • Lisgar (October 17, 2007)
  • Hess Street (October 17, 2007)
  • Sanford Avenue (October 18, 2007)
  • Dundas Central (October 18, 2007)
TMG invited two internationally reputed musicians specifically to come to Hamilton from India to conduct the October 2007 demonstrations: Sitarist Partha Bose and Tabla player Hindol Majumdar. For May 2007, a young and highly promising Sarod player, Abhisek Lahiri, was invited along with Tabla player, Ashok Dutta.

An estimated 2500 students were reached by means these demonstrations.

The general format followed was:

  • General Introduction
  • Introduction to Tabla
  • Introduction to Talas
  • Tabla as a Language of Rhythm
  • Tabla Solo Performance
  • Introduction to Sitar
  • Raga and Its Characteristics
  • Sitar Solo Alap
  • Sitar and Tabla Performance of a Raga
  • Questions and Answers
  • Students Trying Out Sitar & Tabla
  • Vote of Thanks
Resources such as a short write up on Indian classical music and a sample music CD containing Sitar and Tabla as played by the participating musicians were also made available to the music teachers well ahead of time.

The feedback from the participating schools has been encouraging and The Malhar Group intends to continue its in-school demonstration project in future years with more geographical coverage and in more number of schools.  It is also our desire to have more consultations with teachers and the administration in order to better understand the needs and to assist in the integration of our efforts with the school music curriculum as well as geography and history.

A generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, made it possible for TMG to move forward with this important educational project.

The Malhar Group earnestly seeks community support and encouragement in making this project a successful annual event.
